Marshawn Lynch is opening up about one piece of advice from Deion Sanders that continues to shape his life after football. Years after leaving the NFL, Lynch says the Hall of Famer predicted he could earn even more after his playing career if he stayed focused on building opportunities beyond the field.
The former Seattle Seahawks star shared the story during an appearance on Carmelo Anthony’s 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, where he reflected on retirement, business ventures, and maintaining the right mindset.
Marshawn Lynch Shares Deion Sanders’ Advice
Marshawn Lynch revealed that Deion Sanders encouraged him to think beyond his NFL paycheck while he was still playing.
“I think it might have been Deion Sanders told me, ‘If you continue on the path you on, you gonna make more money after you done playing than you ever did in the league,” he said.
That message stayed with Lynch throughout the later stages of his career and into retirement. Looking back now, Marshawn Lynch believes Sanders’ prediction is getting closer to becoming reality.
He added that, “I’ve been retired since 2020, and I’m pushing closer to what I made while I was playing.”
Marshawn Lynch officially stepped away from football after the 2019 season. Since then, he has steadily expanded his work across entertainment and business while remaining involved in sports ownership.
His transition has reflected the kind of long-term planning Sanders encouraged. Rather than relying only on his NFL earnings, Lynch has continued adding new ventures after leaving the game.

Since retiring, Marshawn Lynch has stayed active in several industries.
He has appeared in multiple films, including He Bled Neon, which was released this year. He has also expanded his television resume, appearing in seven episodes of the latest season of Euphoria.
Away from acting, Marshawn Lynch has invested in professional sports. He owns stakes in the Seattle Seahawks, the Seattle Kraken, and the Oakland Roots of the United Soccer League.
While Sanders chose coaching as the next chapter of his career and currently leads Colorado’s football program, Lynch followed a different path centered on entertainment, investments, and ownership.
Even though their careers after football have taken different directions, Lynch said Sanders’ advice helped him focus on creating opportunities that would last beyond his playing days.
What’s Marshawn Lynch’s Mindset?
During the podcast conversation, Lynch also discussed the importance of protecting his mindset from unnecessary pressure.
“Your mindset is the greatest thing that you have. Don’t fill that shit up,” he said.
He explained the idea by comparing pressure to inflating a balloon.
“How I look at it is like pressure. You in control of your balloon. The more you blowing that motherfucker, the more your balloon fill. It’s only with the air that you put in that motherfucker.”
Lynch said people should avoid creating pressure for themselves and instead stay confident in who they are.
“Don’t pop your motherf*cking balloon with pressure from yourself, because you know who the fuck you are and what you stand for and what you represent. Believe in them 10 toes that you stand on, big dog,” he added.
His comments tied together the lessons he has carried from both football and retirement. Along with Sanders’ earlier advice about preparing for life after the NFL, Lynch emphasized the value of staying grounded while continuing to grow.
Years after hearing those words from Sanders, Lynch says he is closing in on matching the money he earned during his NFL career. His acting roles, business investments, and ownership stakes have all contributed to that progress, showing how planning for the future can continue paying off long after a player’s final game.
