Former Colorado defensive lineman London Merritt is drawing attention after comments he made following his transfer from Colorado to Clemson.
The remarks came shortly after the rising sophomore entered the transfer portal and joined the ACC program, sparking discussion around the culture inside the Colorado program led by Deion Sanders.
Merritt spent one season in Boulder before deciding to leave. During that time, he appeared in multiple games and recorded solid freshman numbers on the defensive line. His move to Clemson places him in a program with a long track record of developing defensive talent.
Deion Sanders Program Questioned After London Merritt Transfer
London Merritt finished his freshman season at Colorado with 25 tackles and one sack. After entering the transfer portal, he committed to Clemson and recently spoke about the move during practice.
He addressed the reasons behind his decision when asked about the difference between the two programs.
“It was just a lot better than where I was: facility-wise, coaching-wise, feel like it was just a better option for me,”he said .
The comment quickly circulated online because Merritt previously played under Deion Sanders at Colorado. His statement suggested that the Clemson environment provided advantages in several areas.
Clemson is widely known for its football facilities. In 2017, the school built the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex. The facility later received a $55 million renovation that added upgraded spaces for training, recovery, and an indoor practice field. Programs across college football continue investing heavily in facilities as recruiting competition increases in the NIL era.
Meanwhile, Colorado’s defense faced challenges during the 2025 season. According to PFSN’s CFB Defense Impact Rankings, the unit ranked No. 77 nationally. The Buffaloes allowed 30.5 points per game and surrendered more than 35 points in five separate games. Two of those contests included back to back 50 point performances by Utah and Arizona.
Pass rush production also remained limited during the season. The defensive line recorded just five sacks. Hall of Fame defensive lineman Warren Sapp served as pass rush coordinator but later left the program last month.
Colorado has also struggled to produce NFL defensive linemen in recent seasons, while Clemson has regularly sent players at that position to the NFL.
Deion Sanders currently holds a 16-21 record as Colorado’s head coach. During that span, the Buffaloes have recorded one winning season.
Merritt now joins a Clemson defensive line group that lost several players to graduation and the NFL Draft. The Tigers open their upcoming season on September 5 when they travel to Baton Rouge to face LSU.
