Deiondra Sanders has always been part of one of the most tight-knit families in sports. But growing up alongside Deion Sanders‘ younger children; Shilo, Shedeur, and Shelomi came with a layer of distance she couldn’t ignore.
Deiondra Sanders on the Age Gap
The age difference between Deiondra Sanders and her younger siblings played a big role in how she experienced family life. While Shilo, Shedeur, and Shelomi were still young kids, Deiondra was already in college, living a completely different chapter of life.
“When I was in college, they were so much younger,” Deiondra Sanders said.
That gap created a natural separation. Deiondra Sanders wasn’t in the same spaces or going through the same things at the same time as her siblings.
She Felt on the Outside
Despite the family bond, Deiondra Sanders admitted certain things left her feeling excluded. She was clear that the feeling didn’t come from her siblings themselves.
“I would feel like we was a family, but it was other things that kind of made me feel on the outside other than them,” Deiondra added.
Deiondra also said that growing up, she didn’t establish a very friendly relationship with her brother, Shilo Sanders.
“The sibling that was so mean to me growing up was Shilo,” Deiondra said.
However, she pointed to outside circumstances, not her brothers and sister, as the source of the disconnect.
In fact, she claimed that her bond with Shilo, and the other siblings grew stronger as they matured. “We’re so close now,” said Deiondra in regard to her relationship with her childhood “rival”, Shilo Sanders.
Besides all the issues growing up, being Deion Sanders’ daughter carries weight. The spotlight, the expectations, and the family dynamics that come with that name are unlike anything most people experience.
For Deiondra Sanders, navigating all of that while also being years ahead of her siblings in age added another layer to an already complex family structure.
