Deion Sanders publicly reacted after ESPN’s latest round of layoffs led to the departures of Ryan Clark and Cam Newton. The Colorado head coach shared his frustration on social media, praising both analysts while questioning the network’s decision to let them go during its restructuring.
Deion Sanders Defends Ryan Clark and Cam Newton
Ryan Clark, who joined ESPN in 2015, was among the biggest names affected by the company’s latest layoffs. After Clark posted a message supporting colleagues who also lost their jobs, Deion Sanders responded with strong praise.
“This is 1 of many reasons I love this brother to Life!” Sanders wrote on X. “This was arguably the best talent on the ESPN roster!”
He then questioned ESPN’s decision, adding, “How can You Know WHO still be there and @Realrclark25 AINT! Wow & please tell me the rumors of @CameronNewton ain’t true, and this dude is STILL there.”
Although Sanders did not identify the person he referenced, the comment was widely interpreted as being directed at Rex Ryan, who has repeatedly criticized Shedeur Sanders.
Meanwhile, Clark avoided criticizing ESPN after his departure. Instead, he focused on encouraging those affected by the layoffs.
“Sending prayers and love to all those laid off today by ESPN,” Clark wrote. “So many of you have poured your life into that company, & I know how you’re feeling right now.”
“My hope is as this door closes another opens for you all. God bless!”
Later, Clark shared a workout video and reflected on the day, writing, “My peace is with God, and my humility comes from within. I’ll continue to build myself so the world can never strip me of what’s real.”
Cam Newton was also included in the layoffs after joining ESPN in 2024 as a regular contributor on First Take. He later said he did not expect the decision but chose not to criticize the network, confirming that his independent 4th&1 podcast will continue.
The layoffs followed ESPN’s integration of NFL Network and other league-owned media assets. Chairman Jimmy Pitaro said the company reviewed its combined teams and resources before making what he called “difficult decisions.”
Several other on-air personalities and production staff were also reportedly affected by the restructuring.
The moves left Deion Sanders openly questioning ESPN’s decisions. His comments showed disappointment over Ryan Clark and Cam Newton leaving the network while an analyst who has frequently criticized Shedeur Sanders remained on the roster.
