Deion Sanders shared frustration over the way the Jacksonville Jaguars handled communication after drafting Travis Hunter. Deion Sanders said the Jacksonville Jaguars never reached out to him after drafting Travis Hunter in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Why Deion Sanders Expected a Call About Travis Hunter
Deion Sanders explained that he believed Jacksonville could have benefited from speaking with someone who coached Hunter daily for three years at Colorado.
“Even a guy like Travis Hunter, being drafted to Jacksonville, and I’ve had him for the last three (years),” Deion said. “Don’t you think you would want to talk to me to let me know, to ask me, what gets him going and what backs him off and what, like, you wouldn’t want to know that?”
Hunter entered the NFL after one of the most productive two-way careers in recent college football history. In 2024, he won the Heisman Trophy while starring at both wide receiver and cornerback for Colorado.
On offense, Hunter recorded 96 catches for 1,258 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in 13 games during the 2024 season.
Defensively, he added four interceptions, multiple pass breakups, and earned recognition as the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. He also played more than 1,400 snaps across offense, defense, and special teams during the regular season.
Jacksonville selected Hunter second overall in the 2025 NFL Draft after trading up to get him. The Jaguars immediately began using him on both sides of the ball during his rookie season.
Before suffering a knee injury that ended his rookie year, Hunter appeared in eight games for Jacksonville. He finished the 2025 season with 28 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown on offense. On defense, he recorded 15 tackles and three pass breakups while splitting time between wide receiver and cornerback.
His best NFL performance came in Week 7 against the Rams in London, where he posted eight catches for 101 yards and his first touchdown as a pro.
Sanders did not criticize Hunter’s talent or preparation. Instead, his comments focused on the lack of communication from Jacksonville before and after the draft. He suggested that teams could gain useful insight from college coaches who spent years developing players before they enter the NFL.
The Jaguars have not publicly responded to Deion Sanders’ remarks. Meanwhile, Hunter is expected to continue his recovery ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
