Even before getting a spot with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Travis Hunter had built an outstanding two-way resume. For instance, he recorded 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 TDs in the 2024 season, which pretty much proved his unmatched offensive side. On the defense, his 35 tackles and 4 interceptions really stood out.
Even at the pro level, Hunter has made it clear he wants to maintain the two-way play. Lucky for him, his new team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, is offering to support his ambition to play on both sides of the ball.
The Jaguars are Backing Travis Hunter’s Two-Way Ambitions
Liam Coen, Jacksonville Jaguars Head Coach, is excited to have Travis Hunter play on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. The Coach is confident that the two-way player is talented and smart enough to give a top-level game, which is imperative to balancing defensive and offensive gameplay.
To get Hunter on check, Jacksonville is giving him an opportunity to switch sides of the game. After focusing on offensive rep for a week, Hunter was given an opportunity to work out on the defense. These preparations aim at making Hunter comfortable as a two-way player.
Talking about the two-way approach on the pro level, Hunter says they’re planning to take the training step by step.
“I’m definitely ready, but we’re gonna take our time with it and we’re just gonna get better each day.”
Meanwhile, the head coach revealed the reasons for Hunter’s two-way training. Each day, the Jacksonville Jaguars trainers are working with Hunter to help him clean up everything, ensuring nothing is left out during his training on both the defensive and offensive sides.
When asked about his experience in the pro-level, learning two playbooks, Hunter answered confidently that he was getting the same experience even at the college level.
“Not so much different you know. You just got to get used to it, you know. It’s just a lot of different type of type of calls, but other than that, the defense is pretty easy. You just got to get used to the offense.”
It takes hours of film study to get ready on just one side of the ball, but Travis’ propensity to give his all in the study on both sides is nothing short of incredible.
Projections on Hunter’s Two-Way Performance
Judging from his stats, Travis Hunter is in a very good position to deliver beyond expectations when playing on the defensive and offensive sides.
His numbers reveal his impeccable wide receiver and cornerback skills. Hunter is a shutdown corner with elite awareness and possesses an extreme ability to defend both the pass and run. When it comes to receiving, his stats showcase his unmatched ability to rank up chunk plays, dynamically score, and versatility to perform well in the run games.
The head coach’s remarks show how confident he is in Hunter’s performance in training: “He’s been able to dive in and learn about some of our 3D coverages. What do we call our 3D coverages on the outside? If he has been able to manned up on the backside of a 3 by 1, he knows all those calls already.”
Also, Hunter proves to be aligned quite well with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ training objectives. As he gets more used to the team, he’s likely to put up his outstanding performance on both sides of the ball.
