Deion Sanders Reveals How He Kept a Positive Attitude Despite a Brutal Battle Against Cancer

Deion Sander opened up about one of the toughest stretches of his life in a candid conversation with Rocsi Diaz. The NFL legend spoke honestly about his cancer battle, what it cost him physically, and how he kept pushing through it all.

How Deion Sanders Stayed Mentally Strong

Diaz asked Deion Sanders directly about what she witnessed. Even as he walked around with a catheter, Sanders was cracking jokes. She wanted to know what was really going on inside.

Deion Sanders pointed to a FaceTime call with his son Shedeur as one of the moments that stuck with him. He hadn’t told his sons what he was dealing with, and the call caught him off guard.

“I remember one time I called Shedeur, and I made a mistake of FaceTiming him because I didn’t tell my sons about what I was dealing with, and I called one time on FaceTime, he say, ‘Man you look like Lil Duval. What’s going on with you?'”

The weight loss alone told part of the story. “I lost like, 25 pounds, and I was fighting to get it back,” Deion Sanders said.

Still, losing the weight was only part of the burden. Sanders described how the illness knocked him off balance mentally, keeping him from handling his responsibilities.

“You have no idea like, what transpires in the man’s mind in all the things that God has put me in charge over to make sure is straight, and I couldn’t handle my tasks for a minute because of that.”

The Family Pressure That Never Stopped

Beyond his own health, Deion Sanders carried the weight of his family through all of it. He talked about managing situations involving his mom, his sister, nieces and nephews while fighting cancer at the same time.

The pressure never let up. Deion Sanders said God called him to make sure everything stays right, and that “there’s gonna be a problem” if he doesn’t hold up his end.

That sense of duty is what kept him going. Not inspiration. Not a grand realization. Just the belief that he had a job to do and people depending on him to do it.
