NFL Legend Is Sending His Nephew To Deion Sanders’ Colorado To Become a “Man”

Colorado football continues to draw attention under Deion Sanders, and now another NFL connection is adding to the program’s momentum.

Former Super Bowl champion Aqib Talib is sending his nephew, Yamil Talib, to Boulder with a clear purpose tied to development on and off the field.

Colorado Adds Yamil Talib Through Strong NFL Ties

Yamil Talib arrives at Colorado with a football background shaped by family experience at the highest level. His uncle, Aqib Talib, played 12 seasons in the NFL, earning five Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro honors. Those credentials played a role in building trust with Sanders during the recruiting process.

Aqib Talib pointed to the program’s structure and visibility as key reasons for the move. “I love it, man. I love it,” Talib said. “I love the coaching out here, I love the exposure out here. So that’s why we’re here. He’s trying to get under some great coaches, trying to get that good exposure. I’m glad that Prime came and got him.”

That relationship between Talib and Sanders dates back years. Before leading Colorado, Sanders worked as an analyst and followed Talib’s NFL career closely. That history helped shape the decision to bring Yamil into the program.

“I picked [Yamil] just because of my relationship with [Aqib],” Sanders said. “I told him, ‘You were so good, we’re cool, and I know you’d never lie to me. When you called me and told me you have a dog, you got somebody that you want to play for me, I didn’t even second-guess it.’”

Colorado Focuses On Development And Roster Depth

Yamil Talib enters Colorado after time at multiple programs. He began his college career at Oklahoma State in 2024 before transferring to Charlotte, where he recorded 37 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two pass breakups, an interception, and a forced fumble during his redshirt freshman season.

At 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, he adds size to a defensive line that is undergoing changes. Colorado has focused on rebuilding that unit through the transfer portal, aiming to improve performance after a 3-9 season.

Sanders indicated that Talib is already in position to contribute. “The kid started off a little slow, but he’s going to be in the mix and in the rotation,” Sanders said. “If we played right now, he’d be in the rotation against Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football. The kid can play, and that last name means something to me.”

At the same time, the expectations extend beyond football. Aqib Talib made it clear that personal growth is part of the decision.

“We dropped him off a young man. I want him to become a man out here,” Talib said. “Under Prime, he’s big on that. He’s big on developing the guys and making them learn not only football, but stuff that you’re going to need in life. I think he’s in the right spot to do that.”

“I’m excited, It’s a great place to be,” Talib said. “Don’t look too far into those projections. Prime is on a mission, just know that. These boys are gonna do work this year.”

Looking ahead, Colorado continues to adjust its roster and coaching structure, including the addition of defensive coordinator Chris Marve. Those changes are part of a broader effort to improve results in the upcoming season.
