Taylor Swift Inspires Girls In First Grade To Create a Flag Football Team

A group of first-grade girls in California just proved how far inspiration can go. What started as watching football on Sundays quickly turned into one of the most talked-about youth teams around. And at the center of it all is Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift Sparks A Football Movement

The story begins in 2023 when Taylor Swift started showing up at Kansas City Chiefs games to support Travis Kelce. According to team manager Kristin Mayer, that visibility changed everything for the girls.

“A lot of our girls play other sports, and they’re just naturally athletic, but they had never really talked about football until Taylor started showing up on the screen.”

At first, the girls simply watched games with their dads. Then their interest grew week by week. Soon, watching was not enough.

“But these first graders didn’t just wanna watch football, they wanted to play it.”

That moment led to the creation of the KC Swifties, a first-grade flag football team formed in Orange County, California.

KC Swifties Bring Fun And Competition Together

The team joined the Matt Leinart Flag Football League, where first and second graders usually compete together. Since existing teams were already full, the girls built their own roster from scratch.

They leaned fully into their identity. The team chose Kansas City Chiefs uniforms. Instead of last names, each player picked a Taylor Swift song for their jersey.

That creative twist became part of their culture. They hand out friendship bracelets before games. Their entrances feel like concerts. Touchdowns turn into dance parties.

As one post from the Kelce Brothers X account put it:

“There’s a first-grade girls flag football team in California called The KC Swifties. Their jerseys are named after Taylor Swift songs… they’re actually really good at football too.”

The fun element is obvious. Still, what surprised many people is how competitive they became.

From Beginners To Title Contenders

At the start, expectations were low. Parents assumed the younger team would struggle against older players. That did not happen.

“They started winning, and we didn’t expect it at all,” Mayer said. “To have a team that not only has so much energy and so much joy, but then to have them be good was the icing on the cake.”

By fall 2025, the KC Swifties reached the championship game. Their opponent was a team coached by Nick Foles, a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

“‘I have to face an MVP quarterback and coach against him? Here we go!’” Mayer recalled.

The Swifties lost that game, but the experience raised their profile. Now, with a new season underway and Foles no longer coaching, they are considered favorites.

Growing Impact Beyond The Field

The team’s story has gained national attention. Their mix of sports, music, and confidence continues to draw interest from fans and media.

More importantly, their roster is growing. What started as a small group now has a waitlist of girls hoping to join.

Their influence also goes beyond wins and losses. The players are meeting athletes from the U.S. women’s national teams and sharing their signature friendship bracelets.

Parents say the message is clear.

“I think for all of us as parents, we just really want the girls to see that anything is possible,” Mayer explained.

“And Taylor and Travis are the perfect combination to show them that literally anything they dream of, they can do.”

That belief is now part of the team’s identity.

From watching games at home to competing for championships, the KC Swifties show how inspiration can turn into action. And thanks to Taylor Swift’s visibility in football culture, a new generation of girls is stepping onto the field with confidence.
