Deion Sanders played both baseball and football at the highest level, so when he talks about the difference between the two, it comes with experience.
Recently, Coach Prime shared why it’s tougher for athletes to prove themselves on the football field compared to the diamond. His message was clear: opportunities in football are limited, and every snap counts.
Limited Chances in Football
Sanders made it clear to his players that football is a sport of rare opportunities. “The thing about football is that you got six days that you got to wait for another opportunity to show out in front of the crowd, audience, fans, the family members, student body, everything,” he pointed out.
Drawing from his message, Coach Prime meant that every game carries weight because the wait between chances is so long.
With six days in between, players don’t get endless moments to prove themselves. Instead, each snap becomes magnified, and the pressure to deliver is always there.
Sanders added, “Football, you get to do your thing. You get to wait 6 days. If you bowl out, that’s pretty good.”
For his team, it was a reminder that football demands patience, discipline, and the ability to make every opportunity count when the moment finally arrives. Consistency is the ultimate measure.
Baseball Is the Game Of More Opportunities
While stressing how rare opportunities are in football, Deion Sanders also contrasted that reality with what happens in baseball. “The thing about baseball, you had to be good, then you had to be good the next day and the next day and the next day,” he explained.
Sanders lived it firsthand, and his players understood he wasn’t just speaking hypothetically. Baseball players get chance after chance to recover from mistakes or build momentum, with games stacked on top of each other across a long season.
He drove the point home even further, saying, “Matter of fact, you had to be good 162 opportunities.” That number isn’t just big, it’s the total grind of a Major League Baseball season, where consistency is tested almost daily. Meanwhile, in the NFL, players get only 17 games.
Sanders’ comparison reminded his team that football players don’t get the same luxury. In their game, the spotlight doesn’t return tomorrow, but only comes back after six long days.
