Deion Sanders had close friends by his side during his battle with cancer, but that didn’t make the journey any easier. Balancing his role as a father and a head coach while dealing with a life-threatening illness was an overwhelming challenge.
One of his longtime friends, former Cowboys teammate Nate Newton, recently opened up about what that period really looked like behind the scenes.
According to Nate, Deion Sanders was dealing with more than most people knew, managing his health, showing up for his sons, and leading a college football program all at once. It wasn’t just about being strong; it was about pushing through when his body was giving up.
At one point, Nate recalls, Deion even broke out of the hospital to get back home. That level of determination, Nate says, is what defines Deion, not just as Coach Prime, but as a father and fighter who never let up.
Deion Sanders’ Post-Surgery Recovery Surprised Everyone
After undergoing surgery in Colorado during his battle with cancer, Deion Sanders didn’t waste any time trying to get back home. But his determination left even those closest to him stunned.
Newton shared how quickly Deion tried to bounce back. “Two days after he had surgery, you know, I’m calling him, calling his people, everything. He finally come say, ‘I’m all right. I’ll be home in a week,’” said Newton.
Nate couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “How you going to have surgery and going to be home in a week?” he asked. It just didn’t seem possible for someone to recover that fast.
But that’s the kind of mindset Deion carried even through pain and recovery; he was focused on moving forward. Still, the doctors had the final say. “They didn’t let him come home that soon. They gave him another week,” Nate added, shaking his head.
Nate Newton Says Deion Left the Hospital Early
According to Nate Newton, Deion Sanders didn’t wait for the green light from doctors. He left the hospital on his own terms. “He broke out of the hospital with his assistant from Colorado. She knew what to do.”
Nate says Deion went back home shortly after, determined to keep going despite everything. That move had his friends concerned, so Nate made sure to check on him often. “And I went and visited him every week after that… you know tell him to do what’s right since you not going to stay in the hospital, please do what’s right while you’re at the house, and he did,” Nate said.
Even while recovering, Deion kept his focus. “His first goal was to make it to the Big 12 conference and I think he did that, and then he wanted to see his kids he did that and then boom he’s at Colorado making his, I guess it ain’t announcement or whatever it was, you know, so I’m glad he’s all right.”
Despite everything, Coach Prime stayed on track and didn’t let cancer stop his mission or momentum.
