The Browns have a way of making headlines out of almost nothing, and Thursday was a perfect example. Shedeur Sanders’ jersey showed up on Cleveland’s official online store marked down from its usual $149.99 to just $39.99, and it didn’t take long for the internet to decide that had to mean something.
The discount wasn’t limited to one style either. Men’s, women’s and kids’ versions all dropped, along with t-shirts, towels and other Sanders merchandise, a markdown of more than 66 percent across the board. Screenshots comparing his price tag to the rest of Cleveland’s quarterback room started circulating fast, with fans noting that Deshaun Watson, Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green were all still sitting at full price while Sanders’ gear sat in the clearance bin.
From there, the theory basically wrote itself. If a team is about to move on from a player, discounting his jersey before anyone announces anything isn’t exactly unheard of, and it didn’t take long for talk of a possible trade to start spreading.
The explanation turned out to be a lot less interesting than the rumor. A few hours after the deal went viral, the price snapped right back to normal. Browns insider Daryl Ruiter summed up what actually happened.
“Everyone can relax,” Ruiter wrote. “Shedeur Sanders jerseys are off the 70% clearance and back to normal price at the Browns online team store. People could’ve gotten the hookup, but a discount like that went viral and ruined it for everybody.”

There’s also recent precedent for how the Browns actually handle this. When Cleveland traded Myles Garrett to the Rams this offseason, his merchandise didn’t get discounted until after the trade was officially confirmed, not before. A pricing glitch showing up days ahead of a deal that hasn’t happened doesn’t line up with how the team has handled it in the past.
Sanders remains the backup behind Watson as the Browns head into their opener at Jacksonville this weekend, kickoff set for 1 p.m. ET at EverBank Stadium. He’s shown he can handle QB1 duties if the call comes, having thrown for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie last season. For now, that role stays exactly the same, no matter what a clearance rack briefly suggested otherwise.
