Deion Sanders appointed Andreu Swasey to lead Colorado’s Strength and Conditioning department earlier this year, bringing in a veteran with over 18 years of experience at Miami. Swasey’s intense style and proven track record are already making waves in Boulder. He’s focused on building toughness, speed, and confidence.
Conditioning is one of the most important aspects of development for any position, and appointing a veteran like Swasey, who is also the go-to conditioning coach for a bunch of NFL veterans, including Alvin Kamara, is a major step towards a successful season.
Swasey Brings Heat to the Buffaloes
Andreu Swasey stepped in as Colorado’s Head of Strength and Conditioning in January, following the transition of Maurice Sims to Director of Sports Performance under Coach Prime.
Swasey wasted no time getting to work, launching straight into spring training ahead of a make-or-break 2025 season for the Buffs. Known for his intensity, he’s been seen in vlogs and clips running drills in summer practices, demanding effort and focus from players.
In a recent episode of The Colorado Football, Swasey led a gym session where he pushed the defense to train harder and play more violently. “Arms hang in fire. Be more violent. Let your arms hang. Hey, that’s what I want right there!” he told them.
He’s made it clear: he’s here to raise the energy, build speed, and increase strength. And for Swasey, it all starts in the mind. “To me, everything falls on confidence,” he said.
Miami Roots, Baylor Grit, Family Man
Andreu Swasey is a Miami native and a graduate of Carol City High School, where his football journey began. After high school, he took his talents to Fort Scott (Kansas) Junior College. There, he made a name for himself by earning second-team Junior College All-America honors in 1991, along with all-conference recognition.
His strong performance opened the door to Baylor University, where he became a two-year letterman. He first started at cornerback, then moved to strong safety in his senior year in 1993. The year before, in 1992, he was a key reserve on the Baylor team that went on to beat Arizona in the Sun Bowl.
That playing experience, both at the junior college and Division I levels, gave Swasey a solid understanding of the game, something that later shaped his coaching style.
Off the field, he earned a sociology degree from Baylor in 1995. He’s also a family man, married to Monica, with whom he shares his four kids: Andrew, Jovon, Ashlinn, and Jaela.
His Elaborate Coaching Career
Andreu Swasey spent 18 years at the University of Miami, including 15 as the Head of Strength and Conditioning. He oversaw daily training for over 100 football players and directed a staff of five for UM’s 18 scholarship sports.
He joined Miami in 1997 as an assistant strength coach, left to coach defensive backs at Houston in 1999, returned to Miami in 2000, and was promoted as the Head of Strength and Conditioning in 2001. Known for his intense speed and agility training, Swasey also coached at FIU after leaving Miami.
Earlier in his coaching career, he coached defensive backs at Copperas Cove High School (1995–1997). Over the years, he’s coached in 10 bowl games, including Miami’s 2001 national championship win.
With Swasey now leading the charge in Boulder, Colorado’s strength, speed, and mindset are set to reach an entirely new level.
