Shedeur Sanders is right in the middle of one of the NFL’s most heated quarterback battles, but the Cleveland Browns have already named Joe Flacco their starter. That might sound like a setback, but even Flacco himself has said Shedeur is in a great spot to learn, develop, and eventually take over.
Still, not everything about this situation is perfect. Troy Aikman, who knows a thing or two about being a young quarterback in the league, recently shared his perspective on the one unfortunate part of Shedeur’s position.
Aikman believes Sanders is in a promising situation overall, surrounded by veterans and a team willing to invest in him, but there’s a catch that could affect his growth.
For all the positives of sitting behind a Super Bowl champion like Flacco, Aikman thinks there’s one factor that could make Shedeur’s path to the field more complicated than it should be.
Troy Aikman on Shedeur Sanders’ Development
Troy Aikman knows what it’s like to be thrown into the NFL spotlight as a young quarterback, and that’s why he sees real value in Shedeur Sanders’ current setup with the Browns. Aikman pointed out that Shedeur is in a position he never had early in his career, whereby he’s being coached up properly and gets to study behind a veteran like Joe Flacco.
“If I’m Shedeur or I’m Deion, I like that he’s there,” Aikman told Michael Irvin on his podcast, noting the benefit of watching and learning how to carry yourself like a pro before being thrust into the fire.
But even with that, Aikman admitted there’s one downside. Sanders hasn’t been given first-team reps in practice, and the oblique injury that sidelined him for his second preseason game only made things tougher.
“The only unfortunate thing,” Aikman said, “is that he really hasn’t been allowed to just go do his thing.” Still, Aikman sees a bright future ahead for Shedeur’s career.
Aikman Believes Shedeur’s Story Will Shine
Troy Aikman says that even with the challenges Shedeur is dealing with right now, the bigger picture is shaping up to be something special.
“But you know, everything he does, you know, he’s a Sanders, so that’s part of it. You know, everything he does is scrutinized. He’s accustomed to that,” Aikman explained.
Instead of seeing that constant spotlight as a negative, Aikman thinks it will make Shedeur’s eventual rise even more meaningful. “I think he’s going to have a great story, and I’ve been following him, you know, really since he began at Jackson State.”
To Aikman, the early struggles are just chapters in what will eventually be a powerful journey.
“I expect that when his story is told, which is way down the road, it’s going to be really good. So, I’m pulling for him,” Aikman said, showing his full support for the young quarterback.
In the end, Troy Aikman’s words highlight both the challenges and the promise in Shedeur Sanders’ path with the Browns. While the setbacks are real, Aikman believes they’ll only make Sanders’ eventual success an even greater story.
